Hallkelsstaðahlíð Horse Breeding Farm - Welcome to our website!

Hallkelsstaðahlíð is located in Snæfellsnes, West Iceland, one of the country's most beautiful areas. Close by are the famous Löngufjörur beaches where it is very popular to ride and truly enjoy the qualities of the Icelandic Horse. At our farm we breed horses and sheep as well as running a professional training facility.

About us
Our family consists of three people; Sigrún Ólafsdóttir, Skúli Lárus Skúlason and Guðmundur Margeir Skúlason.

Sigrún has been involved with horses all her life as a trainer and farmer and she is currently the chairman of the Trainers Association of Iceland (Félag tamningamanna). She has been very active in the horse business, sat on the board of the National Association of Riding Clubs for many years, was the chairman of her local riding club Snæfellingur and is now a member of the official horse breeding council of Iceland (Fagráð í hrossarækt). Sigrún is also an active national judge in both gaedingakeppni and sports competitions.

Skúli is a carpenter and a certified horse trainer. He has worked full time as a trainer and farmer since 1993, although his building skills have come in handy every now and then, especially when we built a new house in 2000. Besides that he has fixed up the stables and barns and it certainly is handy to have a builder on site when needed.

Guðmundur Margeir, nicknamed Mummi, is a second year student at Hólar University College. He was brought up with horses and training. Before he went to Hólar he studied to be a carpenter like his father which is a good trade to know alongside being a horseman. Mummi has been an active sports competitor since he was a child, both in track and field as well as equestrian sports and he is a licensed judge for Icelandic Horse Sports competitions.

We all work as farmers and trainers at the farm and we also often employ young people from around the world. Many of them have gone on to study at the Equestrian Department at Hólar and have become professional horsemen and it is a pleasure for us to have been able to help them gain valuable experience before furthering their education. So far, we have had people from nine different countries working for us.

Our services
We offer various services for you and your horse. We run a training facility and pride ourselves in good work with many of our clients returning year after year. We also sell horses and our goal is always to find a perfect match of horse and rider whatever your needs may be.
We also breed horses; have stallions at standing at stud and offer many other services involving horses. Just contact us and we´ll see if we can´t help.

We also breed Icelandic sheep with a herd of 700 sheep on the farm as well as breeding dogs on a very small scale.

Our facilities
Our stable holds 40 horses as well as foals and youngsters. We have an indoor training area and an outdoor arena and a round-pen to train in. All around us there are great riding trails and in the winter we can sometimes ride on ice for days when the lake is frozen.

Our location
Hallkelsstaðahíð stands by lake Hlíðarvatn in the Hnappadalur valley in West Iceland, about 120 km from Reykjavík, Iceland´s capitol city. We run a camping ground and sell fishing licenses for the lake here too.
